DAMNED exhibition

On October 27-29 2011 in Detroit comes an extraordinary assemblage of artists from across this world to display their most introspective creations at DAMNED IV – An Exhibition of Enlightened Darkness. From the infamous to the freshest of local and international talent, this prodigious congregation will allow us a glimpse within the diverse shadows of id and ego…of overall mind and encompassing soul guaranteed to intrigue, disturb, inspire or repulse. Rising from within the ashes of the historic institution of Devil’s Night, this is not Halloween-themed art but an immersion within the immeasurable realms of consciousness through an elegant ambiance of live strings and cirque/butoh-inspired performances.

There are 3 nights of DAMNED, each with its own distinct theme for the ambiance and performances that surround the exhibition…”The Darkness” (10/27), “The Enlightenment” (10/28) and “The Masquerade” (10/29). Each night also holds various unique features which include a VIP Preview with Artist Reception, a formal absinthe tasting courtesy of Kübler Blanche Absinthe, an elegant 13-dish strolling dinner prepared by the Caucus Club, exotic flavored honey wine samplings courtesy of B Nektar Meadery, a formal mask-mandatory masquerade ball, a lush Moroccan-inspired VIP mezzanine overlooking the gallery, a gallery store to purchase art, our Devil Girl hostesses and more. Please visit the “tickets” and “performances” sections for further details regarding each night.

SPECIAL GIVEAWAY: On all three nights of DAMNED, our wonderful Devil Girls will be selling raffle tickets to win a very special prize: The Detroit Deconstruction Skull Ring© created by Atelier Gothique. This ring, retailing at $980 US, is finely crafted from 316l surgical stainless steel custom alloy with black 3D reinforced ceramic inlay. The winning ticket will be randomly chosen on stage at 11pm on Saturday October 29th during the Masquerade Ball (winner need not be present to win and may choose an alternate design up to the retail value). All proceeds from the ticket sales will go to our favorite local charity Burners Without Borders to help feed and clothe those in need on our city streets.

La Luz de Jesus 25

Billy Shire celebrates 25 years with huge group show & book

Part 1 opens October 7 & 8, 8–11 PM

Part 2 opens November 4 & 5, 8–11 PM

To celebrate 25 years of groundbreaking art shows, Billy Shire presents his biggest event ever: La Luz de Jesus 25, a major retrospective exhibition and companion book. The show, offering work by more than 260 artists who have exhibited at the gallery over the years, is so extensive that Shire has split it into two parts, each with two opening nights: part 1 opens October 7 and 8, and part 2 opens November 4 and 5. The list of participating artists is a veritable Who’s Who of art world luminaries. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see all these artists together in one show.

View the complete list of artists here.

View the artist roster for each month here.

The book, La Luz de Jesus 25: The Little Gallery That Could, features images of all the art in the show, a personal anecdote about Shire and the gallery written by each artist, essays by La Luz gallery directors and a foreword by Shire. The book is more than a simple record of the show. Taken together, the images and essays present a history of La Luz de Jesus through the eyes of the artists whose careers are intertwined with Shire and his gallery.

About La Luz de Jesus

Billy Shire opened La Luz de Jesus in 1986 to showcase the work of underground and folk artists largely ignored or dismissed by the legitimate art world. The first permanent gallery space to exhibit alternative art, La Luz quickly became famous as much for its splashy, raucous monthly opening parties as for the often outrageous and confrontational art on its walls. When choosing artists, Shire challenged received notions of “good taste” and “high art” and rejected the arbitrary but long-cherished distinction between commercial and fine art, embracing illustration, underground art, outsider art, animation, and comics, both underground and mainstream. As a result, many artists hugely successful today credit Shire with having launched their careers, and he is widely acknowledged as a seminal figure in contemporary art movements such as Lowbrow and Pop Surrealism.

For purchase questions or for more information, please contact gallery director Matt Kennedy at 323.666.7667 or info@laluzdejesus.com. La Luz de Jesus Gallery is located at 4633 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90027.

Only folding bikes are allowed on the train during peek hours. Which is a large portion of the day

La Luz de Jesus 25

"The Five Energies"
Oil on panel
16" x 16"

I'm thrilled to be able to announce that I will be in the 25th Aniversary show at La Luz de Jesus Gallery in LA! It includes all artists that have had shows there in the last 25 years!! Little old me being one of the shows in 2009.

The show will also have a published book of all the artwork in the show which is a second win! To be able to be included in this book and this gallery is outstanding as La Luz has pretty much created the Pop Surealism Movement!

The show is so big it is being split into two shows. Each part/month of the show has 3 opening nights:

Part 1: October 6, 7, 8; Part 2: November 3, 4, 5

Thursday, 9pm to midnight: private artists reception

Friday & Saturday, 8 to 11pm: public openings

Corpus Illuminata, Detroit

Corpus Illuminata ~ An Anatomic Interpretation

In the Evening of the 12th and 13th Day of August 2011, it will be unveiled an extraordinary exposition of biological and medical exploration entitled Corpus Illuminata - An Anatomic Interpretation. Hosted within the District VII Gallery in Detroit, this unique event will consist of one part exhibition of anatomic-inspired artwork, one part museum of medical antiquities and one part academia of accredited presentations.

The exhibition portion will feature 33 artistic explorations from 24 artists local and across the nation. Within the museum portion, collectors of Victorian-era medical instruments, quackery and oddities will bring together their cherished pieces to re-create themed display rooms ranging from surgical to mortuary. On stage, various speakers will present and discuss a variety of topics that include human anatomy, psychology, the history of contraception, the chemistry of herbal supplements and other intriguing subject matters.

Video installations within the venue will be feature films and videos ranging from historical medical experimentations, human autopsies, artistic interpretations and more. The ambiance is supplied by Life Toward Twilight from the new CD "I Swear By All The Flowers", which explores memories from the end of the Nineteenth Century through a sound collage from antique sources, including music boxes, ticking grandfather clocks, steam trains, wax cylinder recordings, early mechanical factories and old voices. Also, gelatos, gelato floats and flavored teas, courtesy of the Detroit Tea Company, will be served within our apothecary-themed health bar.

The doors open at 6pm on both evenings until midnight and all ages are welcome, however discretion must be advised due to some graphic medical content.

Admission is only five dollars.

We do hope you join us.

From Beyond

Showing in the Red Room Gallery at Fools Mansion in Salem, MA.
My work called "From Beyond" is the same as the show title. It happened to by my favorite story by HP Lovecraft. It deals with awakening long lost senses in us. Parts of our body like the Pineal Gland once served a purpose and they are brought back to use.

From a site about the Pineal Gland:

"The pineal gland's location deep in the brain seems to intimate hidden importance. In the days before its function as a physical eye that could see beyond space-time was discovered, it was considered a mystery linked to superstition and mysticism.

Today it is associated with the sixth chakra whose awakening is linked to prophecy and and increased psychic awareness as consciousness ascends"

In my image I wanted to show the pineal gland as the third eye. Awaken by the machine the scientist created, it was able to see things not seen before. The cone shaped beams of sight illustrates that the drips on the page were actually little creatures that have been there all the time.
